VFW kicks off fall scholarship programs

Commander Johnny Arnold and President Leti Arnold of VFW Post 6899 announce the start of this year's Veterans of Foreign Wars scholarship programs. We are pleased to announce that last year we awarded over $10,000 in scholarships to our young people in Trinity County. One of the VFW objectives is to help the young people in Trinity County meet their educational goals. Some of our scholarship programs are presented here today. Students in our local area schools have the opportunity to compete in the "Voice of Democracy", "Patriotic Art", "Patriot's Pen Essay", and "Scout of the Year" contests and win thousands of dollars. In each of the VFW programs scholarship money is awarded at four different levels: the local, district, state and national levels.

Created in 1947, the "Voice of Democracy" (VOD) scholarship program is an audio-essay contest for high school students in grades 9-12. The students compete by writing and then recording a three-to-five minute audio/essay expressing their views of this year's theme "My Responsibility to America". Local scholarships ($500, $300 and $200), District, State and National scholarships are available - largest $30,000. Deadline for students is November 1, 2016. Please go to to watch and listen to the last year first place winner.
